  1. We set up shop in 180 fow and trolled out from there. Steady pickins of fat coho from flat lines, 2 fish, 125 copper, 2 fish. By far, the best rigs were the wire divers, f/f combo's going 4/7 including big fish of the day, an 11lb. laker that was released after pic's. These were best @ 139 and 159' out set on 1.5 and no ring. We stayed between 180 and 230 fow.

Just an awesome day on the water with my son for the first time since losing his mother [and my wife for 30 years] back in March. So thankful to see him smile again. I'll get the pic's loaded soon.

  2. Kind of bumpy now but looks great for the weekend. I was out of New Buffalo the first weekend in May and caught a mixed bag both days, nothing huge. Body baits Friday and spoons Sunday worked for me. Spent most of the time running near the pack and everyone was catching. If the weather holds out, I'll be heading offshore mid-morning Sunday after the morning flurry.

  3. I've had success hooking up to a heavy trailer and moving back and forth and hitting the brake, just need to make sure the trailer doesn't go flying or get damaged when it drops down if it comes loose.

Don't forget, the only way this works is if someone is taking video...:thumb:

  4. I'm going to try one this spring for the first time. Yes it's already thinning the wallet with all the preparation and new gear for this season. But I am certainly not in it for the prize money, I'm just hoping to improve my skills, learn some new tactics and meet some new friends along the way.

I fish from a small boat and don't have alot of $$ to spend on all the latest and greatest fish catching equipment. And I would tend to agree with Dave also about the costs for am's and lower divisions.

That being said, If I were to win my division, the higher entry fees make for a better payday and might get me to the next tourney, who knows...

  5. Half the fun is creating your own combinations that work for "you" and "your" trolling style and speeds and then matching those combo's with the conditions that produce the best.

Fly, lure, spoon painting, etc...,building is fairly cheap and highly rewarding especially when one of those creations puts one on the wall!

  6. I started a few years ago with manual riggers and small divers and did ok.

Your current setup covers the "vertical", top to bottom, now you need to cover the "horizontal" , out to the sides. Do this with Church Tackle Walleye boards and whatever you want to pull behind them, copper, leadcore or braid and mono with different weight dive bombs or torpedo weights added for the depth you want to reach.

Once you add some distance between the boat and your presentation, your hookup rate will increase and then you will have a "spread".

Good Luck and let us know how you do!

  7. Well that sure looks familiar. The exact same spindle ended my season early last year.

I was able to buy a new spindle from a axle maker in Elkhart, In. for $21.00, a hub, bearings and seals from Starboard Choice marine in Mishawaka, In. for about $38.00 if I remember correctly and did the work myself. Just over $50 bucks but quite a bit of time cutting the old one off square and welding the new spindle on square and true. Had to remove the complete axle to do it, with the boat still on the trailer. If I had to do it again I would just replace the whole axle assembly for just a little more cabbage!

    Good Luck,

  8. ... we have pulled a dead rod out of a active spread only to kill the whole spread. As such if the fish are hitting i don't change anything even if it means pulling one dead rod all day...

We had similar results Sunday..sort of.

I was pulling an old favorite, that was on fire two weeks ago, that didn't get sniffed all morning. Nothing else was working that well either. I finally gave in and swapped out the "old favorite" with a tried and true blue dolphin. That never got bit either but the rest of the spread came to life and we finished a short trip 9/11 losing 2 large steelhead during the acrobatics and boxing 4 kings, 4 coho and a steely. Nothing of any notable size except the ho's were on the heavy side of 4lbs.

The water at the harbor mouth was literally boiling with thousands of baitfish jumping as we passed by at 4:30 in the morning. That was a cool sight to see!
