  1. Prop nut what kind of scanner do you need ? different from the cars? or is it OBD2?

The scanners for boat motors are pretty much proprietary from the motor manufacturere

There are a couple aftermarket ones out there "CDI" and "Siara" that can give you most of the info

Best to have it done by a dealer then ask them to translate what the info means

Like the difference between flat codes

    For example

Omc / bombardier had had codes history codes and crital faults

Hard code is there at the time of scan

History code is the eons recorded in history

And critical are the ones that cause the macine to deduce power and eventually shut down the macine to save itself

If you. Find there are 21 critical codes the motor only has a total of 50 hours on it THE MOTOR IS DAMAGED to say the least more like junk

Or if a Yamaha dealer selling a Yamaha won't scan a motor for you there is some thing to hide

Look for the red flags and ask all the questions you can think of k

Be the educated consumer and send the scammers elsewhere

The computer scann in no way should replace a test ride and a good look see under the hood like before we had computers the computer is designed to make it harder to hide stuff

There will never be a replacement for a good visual inspection and a sea trial ride

  2. Lately I have seen more than a couple nice people get screwed buying used equipment

This realy pisses me off !

Used to be when you bought some thing from a private party you could tell if they where a shady person but these days it's not so easy to read

Guys window selling off his old fishing boat

    Looks real good and clean

But some one put a bunch of extra oil in the gas to hide the rod knock caused when the oil injection failed

Or the guy who buys a newer motor from a authorized dealer and first time out the alarm is going off

Pull up the history report off the computer and see that it has been run out of oil some 25 different times first time the motor only had 3 hours on it

Motor has a total of 50 hours on it and probably spent most of its life In a shop

Don't tell me the dealer never scanned the motor and did not know some thing was wrong

You can get a history report off the computer and also if you are a authorized dealer you can get a warranty report from the motor manufacturer

What the best way to make sure this don't happen to you???

    WHEN BUYING USED ''!!!'!'',,,,,,,,!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Never ever buy any thing you can't spend a hour or two driving around in

You probably would never buy a used car with out a test ride why even consider buying a boat with out one??

This alone will uncover 95% of the possible things that can be wrong

If there is a funny smell or sound or or smoke any thing does not seem rite then take it to a dealer and have it checked out

    BEFORE YOU BUY !!

The important thing is the ride

Just taking it to a dealer is not as good as taking a ride first and then asking what about this or that ??

You are giving some important information what and where to look at and the dealer can do a lot better job checking it out for you

Also most of the newer computer controlled motor will have a memory some store more info than other but most all of them record major bd events like a over heat or run with out oil ect

There is always the possibility that a bad sensor can cause one of these problems but not likely

These major faults can not be erased

This is not replacement for common sense looking over a motor is simple it should be clean no sign of abuse

Please don't get taken by one of these people trying to sell crap

It's just no fun telling some one this new thing you just bought needs some major repairs

Please if some thing similar to this has happen to you share it here. So future new boaters and future friends can avoid this happening to them

Email or pm us any time you have questions remember there is only one dumb question it the one you don't ask !

  3. I sure do like the layout on those Hewescraft Hardtops. The Cabin forward design makes for a lot of cabin and fishing room. Is there a reason why they don't build one IO powered? :)

90% or more of the boats they sell go to Alaska

a out board powered boat greatly extends the boating season in the northern climates

they could not make and sell enough of them to make it worth it for their biggest market

  4. LED lights may be offering you a clue

LED lights as well as computer driven products like fish finders and gps units are verry sensitive to polarity issues

A alternator on a boat puts out alternating current

And a recifyer regulator converts this alternating current into straight dc current

I have found in the past with problems similar to your there was a bad diode in the recifyer regulator letting some alternating current slip by into the dc circuit

This will cause a led lite to flicker and a gps unit to shut down or not start up

Replacing the regulator recifyer solved the problem in my case

After spending lots of time looking for loose wires and bad and corroded connections

  5. Be cautious these days with the cold water and the warming air

    IT'S FOG SEASON

Gps is a must the nicest days are the ones we have to worry about with the lack of wind fog banks this time of year are common

    Be safe have fun!

  6. Sounds familiar. I am dropping $3000 on my Volvo Penta 290 outdrive as we speak. Upper bearings and shaft, seals, bushings, etc.... All part of boat ownership though.

Make sure they took apart and washed out the bottom

When the top breaks gravity takes metal pieces to the bottom and causes problems not rite away but soon enough

  7. I am wood challenged

Not the best carpenter and building the boxes in the back of the boat although not complicated was tough for me

Also the heavy duty vinyl it tough to to bend and form around big flat pieces let alone the smaller pices in the back

Actually sealing the wood with west system epoxy made it tougher to get all the air bubbles out from under the vinyl

But come to find out they make this big roller for putting down floor vinyl in a house that was a big help

Glad this one is about done may leave the shop this week

I have done a lot of transoms but the interior boxes and seating was a new thing that we certainly learned a lot from doing

We can only hope this effort will reward the customer in lots of additional years of use

The transom and floor will no doubt out lst the rest of the boat now

    Thanks for looking ''!!!!'!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. Hoping someone could help me I've been looking everywhere and can't find the answer. Im about to buy the TR-1 gold auto pilot and the speed controller for my Yamaha 8hp kicker. The only issue I'm having is that I have a electric linear actuator for steering already installed on the kicker using the main motor a Yamaha 150 with it's own independent steering as a rudder for fine adjustment steering which is getting annoying. But the TR-1 uses a hydrolic control. I don't want to go making huge changes to my boat, having to buy extra parts. Is there any way I could just bypass the hydrolic pump on the TR-1 and wire it to my already installed electric actuator? In simpler terms I just want to use the interface and speed control. I'm also open to other options if there better/easier.

I'm hooking the auto pilot up to my Lowrance HDS-7 on my Sea Hunt Triton 207.

No I am sory that won't work With a garmin TR1

The hyd pump and controller is only for the hyd steering cylinder used on the kicker will not steer the main motor or actuate and other steering devices

  10. Frank, what do the additives do to fix the problem? I assume they interact with the alcohol to prevent it from separating or absorbing water???

No additives to fix the problem after the separation accurs

As the percentage of alc gets higher the and sits in the gas long enough

It causes the alc to be drawn out of the gas and the alc can only absorb so much water pesentage rate it separates into water and a grey matter alc/ water combination

At this point it past the additive resolution time to pump it out

This problem accurs when setting a long period of time with even smaller amounts of alc as a chemical reaction

The newer marine grade additives / stabiles contain chemicals to greatly slow this reaction down these new additives are commonly a blue color

First clue you may have this problem is a filter that might look like its got some Vaseline in it

This is a complicated chemical reaction that I don't understand completely

So I am describing it as best as I can as I understand it

Just trying to give the guy that has this problem a head start on identifying it and get started down the road of getting it fixed and prevented in the future

Read more on the calumet marine forums page under mechanics corner

  11. I have seen a unusual amount of bad gas issues this spring

And although the gas was probably gust fine when you put it in the tank tis sort of thing has been happening

The key to preventing it is to use the new marine grade fuel additives

Easily identified by a blue color

If you have a honda use the Honda additive mercury use the mercury

Stuff ect ect to e the safest

  13. Frank, I enjoyed following this thread. A great tutorial of a tough job. It sure came out nice. :thumb:

    Well thank you !

I can only hope this keeps the owner in the game

I know it is more than he wanted to get into but after the purchase he found these problems

This post has generated some phone calls and a couple of the same questions keep poping up

    #1

    How much $$

This case was 3500 for transom 2500 for floor up to the console

    #2

We only do these jobs in the off season

This one has lingered on because of some engine problems and some parts problems hope to get it out of here soon

#3 for guys wanting to tackle this at home we can pull a motor and store if for them if they want to do the work we just ask at first chance at supplying the materials and we will supply tech support

    # 4 yes we take good motors off of bad transoms and install them on new hewescraft craft boats

Hewescraft as no problem selling you a boat with with out a motor they have no permanent attachment to any motor companies most other companies discourse you from buying a boat with out a motor with pricing
