I have two going into college this year so time to get rid of some of the toys. First is my 2006 Bayliner. Info can be viewed at north shore marina web site. I also have tackle for sale. Dipsies and flashers. Flies that are used and several new in package. 4 inline boards (one needs a release) Fly and flasher storage containers and two manual cannon down riggers. They have a fixed 4 foot boom with bases, gimbel mounts and two 12 pound balls with offshore releases. I also have a large assortment of smaller trolling spoons and a case. Make an offer on anything you might be interested in.

I hear you! The thing is, towns like Grand Haven, Muskegon, Ludington, and Manistee will survive. They have a large enough base to not need the salmon industry. But think of towns like Onekema or Frankfort etc. The money lost from us not fishing will close those mom and pop shops and downtown store etc. I feel bad for them. I have my boat in Grand Haven. I ran into a DNR guy this summer. We had a good chat about the salmon. I learned a few things from it about the salmon, lakers and gobys and zebras and quaggas . I just hope that this is a down turn in the industry analogous to the mid 80s with the BKD with a rebound. I did have a friend (who doesn't fish but was interested in the downturn) say somethings to me that made me think. "Remembering the old days of how things were and how things are not as good now doesn't do any good. You are only remembering the highs and lows and not the average years. Kinda like snow storms.Everyone remembers the bad years of so much snow or the years we didn't have any. But nobody remembers what it normally is like as you are comparing against extremes".

My guess and opinion (by no means am I any expert) is similar to FBD. Any predator prey relationship in the wild is going to have surges of the prey followed by the predator til it overcomes the sustainability level. Reduce prey means predator die off then the prey comes back etc. The problem with the chinook is that we have a continual addition to the population (from the DNRs) on top of natural reproduction and no decline in the predator numbers thus wiping out the prey. My thoughts are reduce the plantings multistate wide, ride out the bad/changed fishery for the next 5 years or so. Then let the plantings resume cautiously. We will still have a mixed bag fishery with some kings in the high 20s low 30s # class but just here and there. The days of boats limiting out with 20+ fish are gone..... For a while....

The lake trout on the other hand need to drop plantings concurrently with the chinook or we may lose the fishery entirely.
Just my opinion.

I had two friends show up for their first big water experience. I warned them it was going to be bumpy. We started the day about 6:30am in about 80 feet of water and troll with the wind. We eventually meandered to about 120 feet of water and took a 6 pound King on a glow frog DW with a green meat rig on a dipsy set on 3 , 160 back. Then the fun began. A green flounder pounder set at 80 went off and then the other down rigger went with a green splatterback plug at the same time. Lost the fish on the flounder pounder but landed the fish on the plug. A nice 12 pound King. Tried to set the riggers back again and the meat rig went again. After a fairly decent fight it threw the hook. Had to make the tough decision to not reset as the leading edge of the storms were getting close. So we ended with a 2/4 day and the first double I've had in a long time.

Keep at it. I fished all week before I hit my first fish on the last day of my vacation. Keep plugging along. The more you go, the more you learn. Then one day you will get a triple and the hilarity will ensue.

Started at 7pm in 90 feet. Trolled into 70 and hit a 15.8 pound King on white dw with a green fly. Had the rigger down at 65 and an uv icee popped twice but did not stick. Went back and forth to about 110. No other action. Just happy to get the skunk out of the box.

Fish was in good shape. No stomach contents however.

First trip of the year for me as I had some engine work on my boat due to a bad number 4 intake valve. Spent 4 hrs washing spoons straight out from the river. 0-2. The boat runs great. Got some new downriggers and a sunburn. Life is good.

I run 200' of copper on my 330 GTI Penn - with about 300' of braid backing

What # test braided backing?

I have a penn 320 gti that I would like to run with 100' of 32# copper. Does anyone have this set up and if so, how much backing does it support with 100 copper? (Type, size)? I also have a penn 330 that I would like to convert from 10 color lead to copper, I've seen the blood run web site that has the 330 with 50 feet of copper. Has anyone run more than this on this reel or should I stick with 10 color lead on it?

I'm out of Grand Haven. I'm still trying to learn this area, I used to fish out of manistee in my old boat.

That is what I'm planning. Found some 4" snubbers...I'll try it next week. Weather is supposed to cool down next weekend. Should be game time!

Where do you launch from?

I'm still intrigued of the idea of a snubber from the cable to the ball and am definitely going to use a snubber from the ball to the release. I use the Scotty release clips which might make the release line a little long unless I just replace the release line with the snubber. Hmmmm

Not familiar with the Scotty clips but I used a standard snubber with an offshore release. The extra length was nice setting up the lines. I didn't have to reach that far over the side with my set up.

So is the snubber from the ball to the release clip or the rigger cable to the ball. I'm confused?

Actually both. The original post was referring to snubbers at the cannon ball cable to the cannon ball. I think I confused everyone from my comment as I use snubbers from the cannon ball to the release. While I've had no experience with a snubber in the cable attachment to the cannon ball, I've used them from the cannon ball to the release, specifically for the reasons in my previous comment. Sorry for any confusion.

Like the idea of using snubbers on the release at the ball. I'll have to try that.

As for snubbers for the downrigger ball, use the Dreamweaver. So much nicer to handle at the boat.

Heh, I actually misread the original post, I never had problems with the cannon ball breaking. Ive run big jon and cannon riggers. I always got tired of losing fish from too much slack in the line to the rigger. So in my attempt to tighten up the line, I then got tired of sending them down to 100 feet then having the line release from being to tight or wavy having to bring it all back up and reset. So one day I added a snubber an never went back. It allows for a little give and something to grab when pulling the cannon ball in the boat or setting a line. Never got a problem with small fish not releasing either.

I've used them in the past. Just the plain ones used on a dipsey. In my opinion they are forgiving when sending down the cannon ball and keeping a tight line and little slack. But use a good quality release as well.

Did you guys encounter the Fog there in PS? Almost got T boned by 2 or 3 boats out past 90 FOW. Could not see past the bow of the boat. Then of course there was the nets we had to manuver around. just after 8PM we had seen enough and tucked tail. Number of guys trolling the channel but did not see anything go....

We had fog in Grand Haven. Pretty thick at times but cleared in about 100 FOW. The pier was very foggy when I went in.

I went 1/1 in Grand Haven yesterday in the fog. Started out North of the pier in 90 FOW trolled around for a bit. Packed up and went out to 250 FOW and trolled East back toward shore. Got in about 180 FOW to 150 FOW and marked many fish in the top 60 feet. Only the one hit on Mixed Veggie meat rig with a silver spin doctor and a wonderbread dipsey set on 2. A nice 6 pound Coho.

1/1 12# king took a mixed veggie meat rig with a silver flasher and wonder bread dipsey set to 3. Don't know how far back as I didn't use my line counters. Was slightly south of the river in 130 FOW. At 7:30pm.

From the latest weather reports that I saw on the NWS. Its only a 30% chance of rain in GH Saturday, then clear sat night and sun. I have not fished GH much. Is any direction N or S of the river any better?

I'll be out there Saturday night and Sunday. All I've been doing is washing spoons the times I'm out there.
