  1. I can't find the info in it but there is a sliding release system that you can stack on your downrigger cable. You could add as many as you wanted It has a planer and comes up when released so you can reset it. The idea is you could just send the cannon ball down one time and fish all day with the release coming up to be reset. I had one long ago but can't remember the name of the company. It was kinda neat and did work however you could not load your rods up or it would just come up. It also did not trip from the rod so you had to reel it all the way up to change lures. I have no idea what I ever did with mine I might have left them on the old manual riggers I had them on.

Would that be the Shuttle Hawk?

  2. Base maps don't show much if anything, its nice to see the wreaks and some topography . I have an HDS5 with Insight built in. works ok , but I did buy a LakeMaster chip before Garmin took over. They both show about the same info just a little different on each one.

If you go with the base map you could pick out what you really want , either insight, or navionics, hotmaps ect.

Yeah a base map can get you home just follow your trail. BTW I had been looking at the HDS8 and changed my mind to a HDS 7 Touch , its wider than an 8 , has newer software , and no add ons to buy if you want structure scan, its built in. Just have to get the transducer.

Price wise not too much different, except for the add on structure scan unit for the HDS8.

  3. It's not somuchthe lead length matching to the speed, you have to find out what works well for you in your boat! All boats track and run differently, some will work well with a lead length of 26 and others will work well at 29. You will have to find out what works by running a specific length on all rods and see how well it puts fish in the boat.

When I was fishing with you this summer my flies and leads worked but didn't do all that great. Now on my boat they worked very well. Could be they need to be shorter on your boat. spoons have there place , but I have taken most of my bigger fish on flies.

I look forward to fishing next year, if you need a extra person to run a few more rods let me know.

  4. I presently have a HDS 5w/lake insight,I really like how the unit performs. Lowrance has come out with a new units.

I am thinking about a HDS 7 Touch . It has the gen2 software and a wider screen. kind of like going from a normal tv to a wide screen.

I originally thought about a HDS 8 but because the touch 7 is as wide as the 8 and it has the downscan / sidescan hardware already on board no need for a add on . Just the extra transducer.

Have any of you guys had the opportunity to play with one of these new units?

whats the good, bad and ugly on them?

Does Hummingbird or Garmin make a comparable unit?

  5. Ford mortgaged themselves to within an inch of their life. Chrysler has paid off 8.7 billion of the 9 billion borrowed, with interest.

Would it have been better to allow the industry to crash and only have furrin' cars over here?

Alright, I'm off to hop in my Ford Escort that has a Japanese designed motor in it and was assembled in Mexico, but it says "Ford" on it......

you need to look and see how many parts for the so called domestics are actually made here. The list is getting smaller every day. Maybe if domestics were made here it would be different. How about that big expensive outboard, where is that made? only the names are from the states anymore .

  6. I have seen many videos of guys that just go nuts and beat the fish senseless , I just grab em at the back of the head and toss them into the cooler , unless one gets way out of hand , most of the time I can have the hook out and in the cooler before anyone can get the beater out. Besides I like to hear them making a ruckus in the cooler.

  7. Looks like the years over for fishing the big pond they are talking colder weather next week. we caught as many fish as last year , but 1/3 less trips. And the weight of the catch this year has kept a full freezer.

How did everyone do this year? did you make more or less trips. Was you catch heaver than last year?

We had a banner year, at 141 fish. No fish over 20lbs , but quite a few in the 15-19 lb range.

Best day = 4th of July, with a cooler over 200lbs for 13 fish , smallest was 10lbs that day. Sent the catch with the couple that went out with us that day.

  8. How many guys have there radio hooked up to use the DSC function?

i have it on my radio but not hooked up,, is the a cable i can buy that runs it of my humminbirds gps??

The wires should be already there, and there are a couple of ways to connect them. Mine is done on the NEMA 0183. if you have a network it can be done there . You will also need a MMSI number. That you can get through Boat US. The information to install it should have come with your radio.

I just did a search on Hummingbird gps and DSC , a lot of good info.

You may want to check Humminbirds website and the manufacture of you radio to find out which wires to connect to which wires. Mine was very simple 3 wires, Sorry can't remember what the colors were. You will have to enable the radio and the gps to use that fuction. On mine when I turn on the GPS it shows a Satellite/GPS on the radio indicating its working.

  9. On my boat , a 17 footer we wear them all the time , they are not as uncomfortable as you might think. They just take a while to get use to wearing them.

    Safety first.

because there is no second chance!

How many guys have there radio hooked up to use the DSC function? not many I will guess. One button to press and your location is sent to the Coast Guard.

Dave Said "God is good. And I renewed a direct, personal relationship with Him" Personally I think God wanted Dave to be able to help all of us.

    Thats My Opinion

i am really glad you posted this. it has changed my thinking alot. this last spring i was just thinking about life jackets. and someone posted on another forum, do you wear your life jackets and why not. i didnt really have a good answer but they are alittle uncomfortable and very hot in the middle of summer. well we make the kids wear there jackets and they are uncomfortable and hot. but they are young and dont have to do any of the rigging, so they should be ok.

well my wife use to boat and fish with me all the time. then somewhere along the way she has just about stopped, and she got to where she wouldnt go out without her life jacket on. so i was at bps down in cincy and they had a sale on one of the auto open jackets. so i bought her one, and this made her very happy. now she is better about going out, but she still doesnt go out on the big water. so i have one auto inflatable jacket.

this spring i get an email add from cabelas. they have this big sale on the auto jackets. so im thinking thats still 500.00 to add 5 more of the adult jackets. and i dont know if we will even wear them if we had them. so i tell my crew im going to buy these and we all have to wear them. well i do buy 5 more adult jackets, we took them to erie with us back in july. we even broke down for awhile and had to anchor down to let our motor cool where the water line from the outdrive got to leaking so bad the boat overheated. well we still didnt use the life jackets. it just didnt seem like we were in any danger.

after reading this thread i have full intentions of digging them out next year atleast when we are on erie and making sure everybody wears a jacket. i have enough of the standard ski jackets on my boat for everyone onboard. i also have 6 of the auto inflate jackets on my boat now. i just dont know how hard it would be to live with it if someone on my boat drowned because they wasnt wearing a jacket, after me buying the auto inflatables for them. my crew is usely my son and his wife and one or two of his kids. and sometimes my other son, and sometimes his girlfriend and myself. there is just really no reason now for us all to not wear a life jackets.

i know it could happen but i have a 21 ft boat with an i/o. so it would really take some rough water to sink my boat. but it would be very easy for someone to fall in. my oldest son was in the process of putting out our back diver rod, his feet slipped out from under him and he almost fell in. he did pitch the rod and reel in the lake. that was aug of last year, and another reason i was already thinking about getting the auto inflate jackets this spring. but there just no good if nobody has them on.

after reading this i also want to teach everybody, even the kids how to load and shoot the flair gun and how to call for help on the radio. so again thank you for taking the time to post this. im sure it will give others cause to think about what almost happened. and just how little it would have took to have made this trip to have went either way.

  10. Glad you made it through your experience . I originally read this on another website , but it just reinforced the fact that we continue to ware our inflatable life jackets while fishing out on the big lake. Also having a DSC radio and having it hooked up correctly just in case of that emergency. A single push of a button sends your location to the Coast Guard. I found out after reinstalling how well it works , hit the wrong button and received a call on my cell asking what the problem was, woops. I was in my garage 8 miles from the lake. couldn't figure out who would be calling me .

If your ever in Milwaukee I would love to have you come and give a talk to GLSF Milwaukee on what happened.

It opened my eyes and lots of others.

  11. Welcome to the world of Gopro Jim! How'd that mount work out for ya? Did you use it?

    Mount worked great! Thanks.

Mounted In the same place as the movie camera with better results, no vibrations. Makes it easy to change out the card or battery, it's very close to the windshield . Now just have to either update my computer or find different software. My computer is 32 bit and the software works best with a 64 bit. I am not sure if power director 10 is 64 , the new version is (11)

  12. Hey Jim, just curious, how long will that camera record for, and where are they available? Or yeah, one last question, you Milwaukee guys use any spoons to fish...lol? Thanks.

on a 16 gig card it will do 2.5 hours of high def video. Its field of view is 170' . other settings give different results. battery life is a little longer than it takes to fill a card. we filled 2 cards on Saturday 32gigs of video. About 5 hours.

I picked mine up at best buy but you can order direct from Go Pro also.

We ran some spoons along with 3 Flasher flys. Our only fish came on a FF setup. tough fishing unless you ran out to 240-260. I heard it was a bumpy ride back in early. Didn't want to run out that deep with the small craft advisory going into effect in the afternoon. and having neck issues right now.

We were over fish but they were tight lipped. Tons of bait also.

I may get a housing to run off riggers next year.

  13. For $129, this must be the Go Pro 1, not the Hero2?

    The footage looks great.

this is the gopro hero HD naked . the price drop is because 2 other company's have come out with there version.

You still have to buy the cards and have a computer thats fast enough for the HD video,

  14. Picked up a Go pro , The price dropped down to 129, does a better job than my video camera, Went 1 for 1 didn't get it on film though. Only a short 3.5 minute video setting lines after moving 5 miles.

    Awesome camera,

    test video

  15. I run scottys pinch pad releases and my hook up ratio has shot up from the previous year. I was using blacks before , and could not see the small shakers . I run a 30" lead on the release and i could see an ant fart its so sensitive. we has very few swing and misses. 2 weeks ago i was watching the poles and had one must have got the end of the fly. very suttle but you are able to see it. no release on the miss though.
