  1. Set lines 430 North of Milwaukee going 3/4 all kings pulling lines by 8am , fish have been shutting off and not going to waste fuel . First fish came on a FF down 35 in 70FOW ended up netting it on the side of the boat , I guess it wanted to race us . Beautiful morning to be out except for the wind picking up and making things too bumpy for me. I think the girls were disappointed to come off the water so early but weather happens . Looks like it may be picking up finally. Hope it continues .

  2. The worst 4th for fishing in four years.

I don't know if its the temp of the lake the way the fish are traveling but we are having one of the worst years yet.

Left the dock near 4:45 am picked up the first and only fish hitting the cooler by 7am. Ending 1 for 3 , lost one a 250 copper and 1 drive by on the port rigger.

Every trip we have been on been over fish for the duration of the trip, sonar looks like a Christmas tree on Christmas eve. Large hooks all over the screen and its been tough for most. even tried moving to different fish and nada. From Portwashington south to Racine its been tough. Even the catches of coho we had the last few years was way down , only had 1 trip with limits.

I know that the fish are here just tight lipped, makes ya sick to watch the sonar and have loads of fish show up. I am guessing that after the lake sets up with a theromocline it would help but its July and cold water is everywhere. At one point we had 38 down 25, and mid 40s on top. thought about running nets off the back but I am sure the DNR would object. This is a screen shot from last year but it looks the same just a different day.

  3. well guys the Okuma Blue Diamonds are up for sale in the classifieds , Price is posted there. not sure if I can post it here.

One side note, the new rods look very much like the old ones except they have a swivel tip . I will post a review later after I get a few hours with them.

  4. Personally I use 20 lb big game for my backing and never had a problem. But I do change it out every 2 years at minimum , same with the leaders. My first year I fished almost every day so I switched out all leaders and backings that year. Your weakest link is where you will have a failure , a swivel, leader with a nick , backing thats too old. Braid is nice because it lasts longer and has a smaller diameter giving more room on the reel.

    and more time between changes.

  5. This was a few years ago , at the time it was the biggest fish I have caught, I am still working on my tyee but it was close last year.

With all the warm water here in Milwaukee getting out deep to find the fish can be a little tricky , My son nick and I went out tonight and were bumped around for the first 2 hours, We were out on Wednesday and the water was very warm top to bottom. Still managed to pick up one king that night just a shosh under 20#. Back to today the waters have changed again this time being colder than Wednesday. Found 48 degree water down 60 ft out in 140. On our way out to the deeper water we had a rip that took out 200 ft of line then ran full speed at the boat til it came off. Reset the rigger and 15 minutes later Nicks got a nice 10lb king. Then it was quite for a while until the same rod goes off again ripping just like the first one but this time its not running at the boat its running for the bottom. 35 minutes later and lots of grunting Nick nets the biggest fish this year. 22# king. ( the last 2 fish I brought in took over an hour together to bring in ) .

  7. If your familiar with how to check voltage drops and have a probe,(basically your voltage should be the same on both sides of the load) it would make it easy but if not it may be like chasing your tail for a while. If you can run a new line for the lights at least a temp one you may find hat the old wire are corroded maybe even under the insulation , it only takes a pin hole to cause problems as moisture and electrical can make a mess.

If the runs of wire are not home runs back to the battery check there for problems. It sounds like the grounds run together or are back feeding to the lights.

As for the grounds going to the engine block , its not the preferred method but it will work , make sure you have a good ground between the engine block and the battery.

Corrosion will increase resistence ,heat and poor flow of electric.

Let me know if I can help more , just sorry I am in Milwaukee as this would be a fun one to fix.

  8. The 8' talora rods are 119.00 and the Okumas BLT-WR-862s are 94.99 but I don't think that the stainless guides are the way to go. The taloras are 6" shorter , and if you get the 8'6" in talora the price jumps by 100.00 what is up with that?

The last straw was this last weekend when my wife says what this , and she had part of the roller from a bluer diamond rod in her hand, Luckly I had a spare tip left over from when I broke one of them and That was due to the fact that the wire will get caught in the rollers from time to time. This this why I am trying to get the input and where I would normally buy from is gone. So if you have used the full roller rods (BLT-WR-862MH) please leave you input . I prefer Okuma to Talora ( I think its all over priced ) Just because of the popularity of it . But if I get bad feed back on the okumas I will go the Talora route. I just don't' want to keep buying rods that don't work as described.

I wish I could touch feel test out with my own hands before buying but no big box stores here sell them.

I have good quality reels on my blue diamonds it just the rod that suck. The okuma rods I mentioned look good and I am close to pulling the trigger on them. Just want to make a good informed decision.

  9. It can, but for me it isn't nearly as pleasant of an experience compared to a roller rod with the AFCO guides (Shimano Talora, Daiwa Heartland, Okuma BLT-WR). The regular guides have a lot more resistance. If you have never used a good quality roller rod you may not see the difference. The Torpedo 19 strand wire is finer and does provide less resistance on regular guides.

I have also used some of the roller rods with guides with less tolerances and it was not fun with the wire getting caught between the rollers and the frame. Most are also quite heavy due to the weight of the guides.

As for the reels, they should have very smooth quality drags. I wouldn't use a Magda for wire -- especially on a regular guide rod.

Has anyone used the okuma BLT-WR-862MH WIRE RODs and are they better than the Blue diamond roller rods , I have the Blue diamond roller rods and are not happy with them. I see that the Big water rods have a swivel tip making it better right off the bat but I would need some input before buying them.

  10. what kind of boards are you running? how heavy is your copper 45lb?

If your running 45 or 60 lb copper I would use tx 44s . I run my 300 32 lb super copper with walleye boards fine but if I pull out the 450 copper I run a tx 44 for that.

The 32 lb will run almost as deep as the 45 . 10ft difference on the 300 . Hope that helps.

  11. Ok has anyone come up with a good home brew for cleaning up hard water stains off the motors and boat.

My boat is painted black and silver so it shows , I know you can buy a spray that works well but at 15.00 a bottle gets somewhat pricey. I have used vinegar with some success but looking for something better.

  12. CHeck for continuity on the shield and the center wire. If either are bad your problem lies there. you would have to unplug the cable from the head unit ( this is where mine went bad the plug) and using a piece of wire and a tester check to make sure the wires are good. You could jump the plug after disconnecting and just check one end using a ohm meter. If I remember when I was doing the trouble shooting I used a long video cable and an adapter to check mine. Placed the probe in a bucket and it worked , so then i new it was the cable. The longer the run from the head unit to the rigger the bigger PITA it is . I had plenty of problems with that cable , I put a new end at the head unit and took out the plug on the other end . now it works flawlessly . But have to undo the clincher and wire ties to remove the rigger . My unit was only 3 years old.

  13. Guys check your antenna cable , I had a similar problem last year , turned out my antenna cable at the head unit went bad , put a new end on it and works great now . Took me a long time to figure it out as I had just redone my rigger and thought that was it , 3 hours later and a lot of head scratching . If you can test you cable first and go from there.

  14. Jim,you post on Lakelink also do you not?Mike

Once in a while i will post on lake link, under the handle fishhooked. I have done very little posting as our numbers sort of suck . 20 fish 6 trips . Last year we were getting limits every time out.

Coho have not been as plentiful as last year and tuff to locate .

Mike are you fishing out of Milwaukee?
