I'm a west coast guy and like the idea of using a slide diver. However when fishing for salmon in alaska I typically use a hoochie behind a 10 or 11 inch dodger. I use the same setup fishing for large bull trout near my home in central oregon but use down riggers that I don't have access to in AK. After catching my limit of kokanee (landlocked sockeye) last week I tried out the large slide diver without the larger ring with my typical setup. I found that as soon as I reached coho salmon trolling speed 2.5 mph the slide diver turned upside down and returned to the surface. Does the dodger create too much drag for the diver to work correctly at that speed? Will the addition of large ring make it work? I don't have the same problem with dipsy divers. Really would like to have a longer setback from the diver than is possible with the dipsy diver.

Hey guys, I just installed a new 93sv with GT56UHD on my boat. It is working good but I know it can be better. It’s just running at factory settings now. I get some arks but can’t see my riggers. I was hoping you guys can give me pointers on what settings work best for salmon fishing. Anything will help, I know nothing. Thanks in advance I appreciate the help.

The past few years, dipseys, lead core and copper have outproduced downriggers on my boat. I was wondering if anyone runs two dipseys at the same time out of each side of the boat. I watched a few YouTube videos and read some articles so I know I can do it. The question I have is how often do they get tangled? If I run my inside, low diver on a 1 setting and my outside dipsey, high diver on a 2-3 setting they shouldn't tangle.

Wondering if anyone does it or if its even worth the investment in two new wire diver rod/reels. It's not a cheap investment so I wanted to get some insight on what others think first. If I had three people on the boat, I would run two downriggers with sliders, 4 dipsey divers and 2 lead core or copper rods.

	Thoughts?

Most anglers do not realize how much their boat has to with your fishing success rate. I trolled commercially on Canada's west coast for years and I know what I am talking about. I have since retired from that and have been developing and marketing voltage tuned fishing products for the last 6 years. It has always been a mystery to me why one boat fishes better than another, up until a few years ago, that is. To help me to understand this, I advertised "Free Help" for boat owners who had a problem catching fish. This helped me to build a database of scenarios. The respondents had problems with both fiberglass and aluminum boats, in both fresh and salt water, and they are all curable.

If you don't think that fish will be effected at a distance, pay attention. If a boat doesn't fish well, will that boat catch fish by going deeper with the lures? It depends on how bad the boat is and the conductivity of the water (mineral content). We fish for salmon beyond 200 ft on a regular basis in BC. When a boat does not fish well, that angler won't catch much fish even beyond that depth. This phenomenon is regulated by the boat's electric signature in water. Here is an example of one chap that I helped.

He has a 19' aluminum boat with outboard and kicker and fishes Lake Ontario. He could not catch fish within 150 ft of his boat. Some aluminum, by itself, will actually give off a negative signature. Aluminum is basically anodic in nature. What is required, is to change the hull signature to cathodic. In his case, it was simply running a jumper wire from his lower outboard legs to the steering swivel and ensuring that there is electrical continuity from the trim zinc through to the hull. The outboard zincs are now protecting the aluminum hull as well as the outboards. This changes the boat's signature from negative anodic to positive cathodic, or at least neutral, where fish are not being repelled. Adding more sacrificial anodes to the hull will also boost the positive signature.

Most newer outboards will already have a factory jumper wire seen at the lower portion of the steering swivel. Some guys (manufacturers) will also use nylon or wood on both sides of the transom where the outboard is clamped. This may cause you to loose electric continuity from the outboard to the hull. The best test is to use an ohm meter and test for continuity between the trim zincs to the bare hull. My preference is to use the 20 ohm setting.

Oh yeah! The guy with the problem, he is now catching fish under his boat and is simply amazed that one jumper wire cured his problem. He was only one of many boat owners that I helped. Fiberglass boat owners can have just as much of a problem, and from small amounts of underwater metals. Aluminum is not the only problem metal. Absolutely every underwater metal that is by itself, or in a group of interconnected metals, will give off a signature. Saying that, a boat can have several signatures coming from it. This is where "bonding" comes in. Every underwater metal should be interconnected to each other and joined to the engine block and negative ground. This means metal through hull fittings, trim tabs, transducer brackets, bow protectors, everything. Once you do this and have an adequate amount of protective anode attached, you will be giving off one positive signature, and you will catch fish under the boat. You will also catch more fish with lures closer to the boat instead of being 100ft away. For receptive fish, the positive voltage field will put them "in the mood", and if close enough, they will seek you out. I say receptive, because not all species respond to it, but the important ones do. For the most part, aluminum boats do not require much bonding, as the hull itself is conductive.

Looking for advice on how to keep the line from breaking when a big salmon hits my wire diver rig (Magnum Dipsy). I use a shock absorber and fish with a 30# leader, but when a large fish hits, either the leader breaks or the wire breaks, usually right after the hookset. I use Okuma Convector reels, and the drag needs to be tight to prevent the line from paying out while trolling. Would adding another rubber snubber help? Any advice it appreciated!

Alas, the ice fishing gear is tucked away and thoughts of sugar plum colored lures are dancing in my head. It will probably be well over a month before I even get my boat out of the shrink wrap here in the Frankfort area, but it's time to start preparing and buying gear. I am interested in setting up a couple of rods with weighted steel line, and actually went as far as buying the line towards the end of the season last year. The trouble came when I found out that terminating, or splicing, the line to braid and mono created such a big knot I couldn't get it through the levelwind guide. I tried the termination kit, several knots, and finally bought the needle to splice it to the braid (which I liked the best). I know I really didn't have the correct reels but I just wanted to test the stuff out, and without altering the shape or removing the plastic from the guide, it just wasn't going to work with what I had - which was a Penn 310 and Diawa Sealine 47LC. So this year will start out with a couple new reels to accommodate the weighted steel. My question to those using this line, is what are you using for reels? Do the bigger Tekota or Okuma reels come standard with a wider space in the guide, or do they too have to be altered? Are there other reels worth considering for this purpose? Also, I had planned on setting them up on line counter reels because that's what the charter I went out on had (He ran mostly Tekota 700LC's). But are line counters needed or useful in some way being we are using a pre-determined length of line? I am thinking about starting out with around 200' and/or 300' set-ups, so looking at reels able to hold that at least. I look forward to and appreciate any information on what reels you feel are best for the task and how you are set up. Oh heck, tell me what rods you like too.

	Thanks guys

Fished out of manistee this weekend, lots of boats caught some nice fish using meat rigs while our meat rigs stuggled to catch fish. We ran big weenie brand meat rigs staight of the package with regular salted and unsalted herring strips on 8" and 11" blades... Why were these not catching many fish? Do they need to be rigged differently? What are our a couple of other good meat rigs brand that might work better? Any suggestions?

I had gotten out of salmon fishing for about 12 years, but in the last three bought another boat and am getting back into it. So much has changed inthe last 15 years. Anyway, I usually go out in the dark and have my lines set by daybreak or before. For simplicity, I tend to run all or mostly glow spoons to start. Then switch to 50/50 spoons flashers as the sun starts to rise. I usually get fish, but don't do as well as other anglers. So just wondering how you all start your day? Would I have better odds running flashers to start? If so, meat rigs, flies, or spin n glow type lures?

Sent from my moto z4 using Great Lakes Fisherman Mobile App

45 copper lenght recommendations for kings

For trolling 40 degree Lake Michigan for salmon early spring:

For any Rapala shallow or deep been using loop knot.

Dreamweaver size 3 snap swivel for Thin Fin, Thin Fish, Hot N Tot, etc. Started 30# mono, now 12# mono from boards various length coppers.

Anybody out there feel strongly about snap only (no swivel) for these lures? Been reading about bass guys only using snap for crankbaits? Does it really matter?

Trying to keep lures changing and fingertips warm at same time...
