According to Michigan Sea Grant, loons, ring-billed gulls, grebes and red-breasted mergansers were among the 2,985 casualties of botulism, a neuromuscular disease caused by the bacterium Clostridium botulism, along a 12-mile stretch of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.
