I know this is a "Great Lakes" site but what the heck.
It was April 6th of 1999, I took my wife and 2 sons for there first Lake Cumberland fishing trip. We drove down that day, unpacked and still had time to wet some lines.
So on the way to the lake, I noticed the cooler top had blown off and I thought I seen where it went. Turned around and looked for 10 mins to avail.
So off we went to the lake, got the boat in the water and off we went.
Drove to my favorite spot in White Oak creek. Set the lines. I believe I had 6 out on yellow birds with fresh Gizzard shad trolling at a snail's pace .
Trolled for 10 mins and the first fish was on. My oldest had fun bringing him in and said "That was not to hard". The next fish came shortly after the first. My youngest brought that one in but it was a small fish. Maybe 3-4 lbs so we let him go. Now I figured this was great. Two fish in the first 30 ish mins , a great start.
So I turned the boat around and started back on the same path where the other fish came from. I do know the area and I knew I was up on a flat on the port side. So I was watching where I was going and my youngest yells. Dad!!! Dad !!!!! fish on!!!!!!!! So I grabbed the pole and just watch the drag scream!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! As soon as the fish stopped I tighten up and set the #2treble hook and the drag was screaming again. So I told the wife, this ones yours and the fight was on. I had to clear the rods. The fish went straight to open deep water. After I cleared the rods the wife was screaming its to big you take it. I said no way , this one is yours. So after 15 mins of her screaming at me I can not hold on,blah blah blah.......The fish was close enough for me to see it and the first words that came out my mouth was"WE NEED A BIGGER NET". I never seen a fish that big in my life. So I netted it with the head and tail sticking out of the net!!!!!!!
First I said to the wife and boys was run to the front now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The fish was exhausted but you just never know if it started trashing around. So after a minute I went back to get it out of the net and was just in awww.
It was great day putting my family all on there very first striper’s.
Now here is a clip of that day. My camera was not doing good and I was lucky to get a little on film.
