My first time was with my dad around 1977-78 in the spring we launched out of Weco Beach in Bridgeman, Michigan. We had a 14’ deep”V” starcraft that had (2) manual pull pin Reveara downriggers and bench seats.

Well...lets see...there are some pictures floating around the family somewhere of me still wrapped up in a blanket sleeping in the boat while the rest of the crew were fishing....

So I guess Technically my first time out I was still a baby...Probably in the summer of either 1975 or 76.

When was the first time I actually had a hand in reeling in a fish? Well....I was probably around three or four...and either my grandpa, dad, or uncle would stand behind me and help me hold the rod while I reeled as fast as my scrawny little self could reel....and yes back then I was a scrawny twig. I'll have to see if I can salvage a few of those old photos from when I was a kid and scan them in.

The cool thing is now I am the Owner of the boat I grew up fishing on. My grandfather bought the Half Dozen brand spankin new in 1978. It is a 21 foot cruisers with a little cuddy and a chevy 305 small block V-8. Still in pretty darn good shape too. Before that he had a 19' Graddy White. But I have only seen pictures of that for I was too young at that time to remember that boat...

and we are still catchin a few fish out of it.

The first time I can recall fishing on LM was in the summer of 1966, when my dad took my sister and myself to fish for perch on the south pier at Grand Haven. But we didn't fish for them, because there were millions of floating, rotting alewives in the water, a stinking carpet perhaps 50 feet wide along the beaches as far as the eye could see in any direction, north or south. :(

But of course that just set the stage for the kings and cohos, which were planted about that time. And the rest is history. Those first salmon must have gotten huge on the alewive feast.

Anyhow, we went to Pettys Bayou on Spring Lake and caught a few gills.

My first time would have been when I was around 7-8 years old(83'-84') and I would get sicker than a dog evertime up untill I bought my own boat 4 years ago. I am actually really surprised that I ended up getting into salmon fishing on my own cause I had some REALLY bad trips out there when I was younger.:o

I would have to guess around 86 or 87. A freind asked me to go, he borrowed his bro in-law's 16 foot boat with home made riggers. I caught my first salmon from the big lake on that trip, an 8 lbs coho coming between the outer arms at Muskegon.

Is that a song lyric, Bev, or are you just messing with me?

I know my Dad brought me out on the pier for perch when I was younger, but my first time for salmon was the first year there were boats fishing for salmon out of Grand Haven. 1969 or 1970 maybe? We borrowed my uncle's Sunfish sailboat, my Dad sailed the boat while I held a Wonderrod with an 1810 closed face spinning reel as we dragged around a spoon. We didn't catch any:eek:

My 1st time was the spring of 1981 on one of my dad's friend's boat out of Weko Beach in Bridgman. Caught 3 coho's on the only lure I owned a Countdown Orange and Gold Rapala. Still have the lure today. That was the only rod that caught fish that day till one of the two down riggers went off w/ a green J-plug. What a fish a 25 lb king. After seeing that and my catch of 3 coho I was hooked. My dad and I then fished out of weko beach for a number of springs in a 14 ft smoker craft w/ a whopping 6 horse Evinrude. (45 minute boat ride from Weko to the Cook Plant). Went away to college in 1995 and got done in 1997. Bought an 1850 Lund Tyee a year later and have fished out of St. Joe ever since. Just absolutely love it!!! :)
