Unreel

Last year while trolling out of South Haven on my old mans boat, I witnessed a rod take off out of an ill tightend down rod holder. As I watched the rod fade into the prop wash I was saying rigger rigger rigger hit the rigger.....and bam the downrigger popped. I grabbed the rod and felt a fish on the end. After a minuite or two I felt some dead weight along with a little shake. I told my brother that we just caught a rod with a fish on that rod.....To our amazement we in fact did catch that rod and proceeded to reel in a nice laker, it was our lucky day.............On a similar note, last night I heard of a story from last weekend on the pier in South Haven. I guess they have been doing real well on the Steelhead and a few guys from our marina headed out there. As one guy was setting his rod down for a brief moment swooosh it launched off the pier. About 30min later he noticed a rod tip bobbing in and out of the water....so a few guys from the pier casted some spoons out there and after several attempts caught that rod. Needless to say that rod STILL had that steelhead on there and he indeed ultimately reeled it in. Moral of these stories I guess is to never leave your rod vulnerable and always check your rod holders and if you do loose a rod to the drink, you never know you may get lucky and get it back!
